But on Tuesday Serbian heartthrob Novak Djokovic proved he's just as comfortable in the water as he is on the land as he took off his shirt and dove into the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Marbella, Spain.

The 29-year-old cut an athletic form as he stood in the Med and showed off his gym-honed body.

As he splashed around in the water, he stretched out his taut arms, which have been sculpted through years of on court action with his fierce backhand.

The waves may have crashed against him, but owing to his muscular legs he easily stood his ground, and frequently looked back to his wife Jelena who waited for him on the shore.

And while his swim trunks weren't visible beneath the water, he still managed to show a bit of personality and style with his two necklaces, one of which featured a large yellow cross.

Jelena, who met Novak in high school, eventually made her way into the water - much to the delight of the 12-time Grand Slam singles champion. 

After enjoying time in the water, the pair returned to the sandy shore where Jelena wrapped up in a blue towel as Novak - a notorious prankster - made jokes and set her into a fit of giggles.

Earlier this month he bowed out of Wimbledon early, suffering a shock defeat to American Sam Querrey.

'Congratulations to Sam, he played a terrific match,' he said shortly after the loss. 'He served very well, as he usually does. That part of his game was brutal today. Well done, he overpowered me.'

The media probed Novak about whether he was experiencing problems, but he refused to comment.

'I don't want to take anything out of victory from my opponent, I had my chances, served for the fourth set, led in the tie-break but wasn't feeling the ball as I wished.'
