Inside Jackie Kennedy's home which became her fortress after JFK's assassination

Jackie Kennedy’s vintage Georgetown residence known as Baker House is up for sale and it is the perfect combination of luxury and history.

Jacqueline Lee Kennedy started staying in Baker House after the tragic assassination of President Kennedy. But the stay was unfortunately short as the real estate wonder became a center of attention for the press and paparazzi. Along with Jackie Kennedy, the vintage mansion has been a home to a number of historic figures and celebrities including Georgetown Mayor Thomas Beall, Secretary of War Newton D. Baker, and the former Miss America Yolande Fox.

Inside Jackie Kennedy’s fortress after JFK’s assassination

Jackie Kennedy’s Georgetown Fortress has been specially built after combining three houses which include 13 bedrooms, 13 full baths, and 5 half baths across the three homes. The former Kennedy home has a few of the original elements intact including original fireplaces, the grand entry hall, and a wood-paneled vintage library.

The house which is currently valued at $19.5 million has all the modern amenities like an elegant dining room with the gold-leaf patterned ceiling, a gym, an executive office, and a spacious modern kitchen. The second floor also includes a spa-quality bath and a private balcony with garden views. One of the most exciting features of the house is its lush view of the Washington Monument right from the property.

The unique historic character of the house

One of the main attractions of the Baker House lies in its historic significance as it maintains its unique charm with oak herringbone flooring and the vintage outlook maintained throughout the decades.

The locality of the house is also special as the nearby places include the Georgetown Waterfront Park, and The White House, the Capitol Building, and other notable DC landmarks are also only a few miles away.

The neighborhood of Baker House is a hotspot for celebs like Billionaire Jeff Bezos and Former United States Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. Historic figures like Francis Scott Key, Thomas Jefferson, Elizabeth Taylor, and Alexander Graham Bell also lived nearby.

A look at Jackie Kennedy’s life after JFK assassination

Jackie Kennedy stayed at the Georgetown house for about a year before moving out in 1964 to a 15th-floor penthouse apartment worth around $250,000 (at the time) at 1040 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.

The Manhattan penthouse offered her family more privacy, which they really needed. While the former first lady limited her public appearances to the bare minimum, she still appeared occasionally including selected memorial dedications to her late husband.

She personally maintained her connection with the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. Architect I.M. Pei designed the notable establishment, which is situated next to the University of Massachusetts campus in Boston.

Half a decade later, Jackie married her long-time friend Greek business tycoon Aristotle Onassis, and took the legal name Jacqueline Onassis.

With her husband Aristotle Onassis, Jackie Kennedy had six residential properties including her 15-room Fifth Avenue apartment in Manhattan, her horse farm in Peapack-Gladstone, New Jersey, her husband’s Avenue Foch apartment in Paris, his private island Skorpios, his house in Athens, and his yacht Christina O.

Sadly, she became a widow for the second time when Onassis in 1975. Jackie herself passed away almost 20 years after her late husband’s death, in 1994. She was 64-years-old.
